Rostering and Resourcing
The Rail Operations Solutions team offers expertise and experience in all aspects of workforce resourcing to assist your operation in planning employee numbers and meeting business and financial objectives.
Workforce Resourcing
We have a team of industry professionals using software systems and processes.
The services and guidance we can offer extend to:
- The development of long-term plans, in particular train drivers
and on-train staff. These incorporate predicted and actual turnover, training and recruitment and the planning of workload changes driven by service alterations. - Analysis of traincrew diagram efficiency and deliverability.
- Supporting the production and ontroduction of employee rosters and links and analysis of efficiency, spare capacity, deliverability and human factors.
- Traincrew Depot strategy in relation to service delivery, rolling stock and fleet maintenance programmes.
Rail Operations Solutions team’s experience and
expertise extends to line, middle and senior management of traincrew and on-train grades, including interim Operations Director roles.
We also have significant experience of negotiating with local and HQ level Trades Unions and have been involvement in a number
of restructuring initiatives.
Establishment Setting
ROS has a bespoke Establishment setting methodology that includes spare cover requirements and ratios, and analysis of all areas of non-work activity: this covers 30+ categories including sickness, training, detachments, etc.
We understands that clients require a robust and transparent process for defining the number of operational staff required to deliver a service, and our software has been developed to provide reassurance for this process.
The ROS Establishment software allows for:
- Variable working week in days and hours.
- Variable numbers of rest days per week and contractual days per year.
- Different diagram types, including long-term and short-term, local, and adhoc.
- Variable spare length and variable maximum and minimum diagram lengths.
- Variable leave allowances.
- Variable operating efficiency (when used in conjunction our Roster Optimiser software).
- Variable company spare ratio (if required).
Roster Optimiser
Our Roster Optimiser software calculates the maximum spare potential of the base roster and then compares it against what is actually achieved, taking into account individual levels of competence, diagram content, employee vacancies and spare movement.
The software allows for the following:
- Variable Terms and Conditions, including working week in hours and days, diagram type, spare movement and length, maximum working hours and turns of duty, and maximum and minimum diagram lengths;
- Employee and diagram route and traction requirements; and
- During input, a number of automatic checks and calculations are undertaken.
The following are the key outputs of the system calculated by day, week, link and depot: diagrams not assigned, rest day distribution, % of diagrams covered and not covered by a spare turn, maximum spare cover achievable, and the actual spare cover achieved expressed as percentage efficiency.
The latest enhancements to the software include:
- Checking of route and traction retention.
- Better presentation of finalised links/rosters in MS Word.
- Spare efficiency calculated for each link and across the depot.
- Specification of up to 20 different work activities.
- Increased numbers of diagram types.
- Diagram and spare summaries for up to four different shift types.
- The tumbling of links/rosters across the lifecycle with data produced for each week.
- Average level of spare efficiency for the life of the link/roster.
- Outputting of link data into Fatigue Indexing software.
Upon completion, all finalised links, rosters and key outputs are then fully exportable to MS Word.
